Ishiganto

Once upon a time on the island of Okinawa a Chinese Kungfu man came to teach Kungfu but he also chased away evil and devil spirits from the Okinawan's houses.  His name was Ishiganto.  When Ishiganto died the Okinawan people missed him.  They loved Ishiganto.  So the Okinawan people put Ishiganto's name on a carved stone at the entrance or corner of their property.  Then they put a lion statue on the roof.  The lion statue was called Shishi Lion.  Ishiganto and the Shishi lion protected the house and the people forever.

Story by Teruo Chinen Sensei.
